Swann's Catalog of Black Teas

Long the obsession of Britons, black teas are enjoying a new-found popularity with Americans. Our favorite black teas come from China, India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya. They are excellent in the morning, as an afternoon delight and after dinner to round out the meal. Black teas contain caffeine, but the effects are gently released.

India has concentrated on growing black teas in some of the best geographic locations in the world: Darjeeling is at 6,000 feet above sea level with a cool, moist climate, sufficient rainfall and well drained sloping terrain . Assam produces strong, well rounded and malty teas with rich aroma and flavor and deep red liquor. Nilgiri teas are often bright and fruity

Ceylon teas grown in Sri Lanka, tend to be softer and aromatic with an amber liquor and a rich astringent flavor.

China black teas have admirable strength, heady aroma, and delicious taste.

Kenya's teas offer a strong and dark liquor balanced with a sweet flavor and fragrance.
