Drink Green Tea; Avoid Cancer.
Scientists are beginning to unravel how green tea fights cancer. Benefits are attributed to a powerful antioxidant called EGCG. EGCG targets and binds to a protein on the surface of tumor cells and inhibits the cell's growth. Two or three cups a day may be enough to produce the effect.
Chronic Lymphoma Leukemia
Currently there is no cure for this leukemia. A Mayo Clinic study found that EGEG helps kill cancer cells by cutting off the cells' communication signals that they need to survive. (CBS News, Rochester, MN 4-1-04)
Green Tea for Prostate Health
A recent Mayo Clinic study found that the polyphenol in green tea 9EGCG) inhibits the growth of protate cencer cells and in high concentrations destroys them. An epidemiological study by study by Australian and Chinese scientists showed that men who drink green tea daily have 1/3
the risk of prostrate cancer compared with non-tea drinkers. (To be published in the International Journal of Cancer)
Prevalence of Parkinson's Disease
Yes, the prevalence of Parkinson's is lowest in countries where green tea is consumed. The reason may be because EGCG promotes the flow of dopamine to the brain area that needs the dopamine to keep the individual's muscles moving smoothly and efficiently.
